Litter R2 Riky had a shame but still some luck in the
shame. It was my mistake... And a little mistake of Elskede too. I don't
know how this is possible but Elskede was in heat again 8 days after she
was already pregnant. Because of her term was a week later, I did clean
her cage like usually, took flowerpot and threw all away to basket. I
did see immediately that there are 4 babies, but it was too late. Babies
already got smell of other Syrians and hamster mother didn't want them
back. She didn't kill them but she took one baby and started to run over
the box and then after while, she gave it to her cheek - pouch. So I
thought she would kill all of them with time. I tried few times to get
baby out and let her be, but she did repeat all again and again. So I
had to take her whole litter off :-(. But what to do with babies? If I
would try to take care myself, I will have nearly no chance to raise
them. I had no other Syrian hamster mother available to take care of
them, so I tried Campbells mother who already had 7 babies 1 day old. I
was very afraid of she will not be able to raise them due to she is too
small for Syrian babies and also she will not take them. But whole
Campbells family did take care of these 4 nearly orphans, include step-father
and older babies from previous litter like they are own babies. So they
had enough of warm and care. But what about milk? Can Campbells mother
wean 4 Syrians and 6 own babies? I must admit that I am feeding
additionally all 10 babies (1 Campbells baby died) for now 2x a day. I
am giving them kitty milk for kitty orphans, which is perfect for
hamsters. You must take syrette without needle and be very careful
whilst feeding... I will write about this later with photos and video. I
am giving hamster mother much of cheese etc. Until now it seems that all
babies are normal size. Fortunately hamster babies start very soon to
eat first solid food, so cross them fingers! I wanna thank to Campbells
hamsters for their super feature and I must admit they are really so
cute species! Although I love Syrians more, I must admit that Campbells
is slowly gaining my heart! So soon, there will come a day, when all 4
Syrian babies will grow over their step-mother and I will have to take
them away. It's very emotive to see Campbells mother carrying Syrian
babies although they are 3x bigger then own babies. And it's also
beautiful that all 4 Syrian babies are nom spot DS like their parents :o).
So you can see, don't touch babies, but sometimes you must do it. Today
babies are 4 days old and if they will really survive, it's only
Campbells family credit. So we are nearly week old now and we are
growing much :o). We are 9 days old today! So we won and now we are
aside from mother :o), because we don't need her more. We are smaller
and a little poorer but we are :-D. |
